Recently a friend of mine from Vancouver was visiting Los Angeles, and he asked me if I had been to The Last Bookstore yet. When I said no, he looked at me, aghast, and insisted I had to go, because it was amazing. I couldn’t imagine what would make it more amazing than any other independent book store. Don’t get me wrong-I obviously, OBVIOUSLY love book stores in just about any way shape or form, but I wasn’t sure what made this one so much better than any other. Until I went. And yeah, it’s fucking amazing.
The badass post-apocalyptic sounding name should have tipped me off, but the aesthetic of this place is so punk rock that every fiber of my being fell in love with it.
There are sculptures made of books everywhere. Book tunnels. Front desks made of books. Book windows. Book towers. Book EVERYTHING. It is so freaking beautiful. There are also several artists spaces that you can peep, unfortunately my friend and I got there super late and so didn’t get to have a look.
Leading out of the science fiction/fantasy room was the most magical (um, only) book tunnel I have ever seen, and once you pass through that magical portal you find yourself in a room of color coordinated books that are all a dollar or something ridiculous like that.
Point being, it’s hands down the coolest book store I have ever visited and I am so happy it’s in my city so I can visit it ALL THE TIME.
