Do you remember the joke from the Simpsons? When Sideshow Bob tries to convince the court that “Die Bart, die,” was not a death threat, but a note written in German? Because in German, “die” means the. Though in this case there is a slight correlation: Die Wandetreppe (translation: The Spiral Stair) is a book shop focused entirely on mysteries and murder.
Die Wandeltreppe was the first mystery-only bookstore in all of Europe when it opened in 1989. At the time, the only other similar shop “nearby” was London’s Murder One. And yeah, they focus on murder mysteries, but you’ll find a few other choice tomes on the shelves as well. The owners are book lovers and so sometimes they just can’t help but take a cute puppy home, murder mystery or no.
Here you will find both used and new books, as well as—and you’d have to live here to know how special this is—a section of used English books in the back. Oh hells yeah. I don’t even read murder mysteries and I love this bookstore.
Twice a year Die Wandeltreppe has an event called Nachtbuchhandlung or The Night Book Store. Customers can come and drink wine, browse books, and chat until late into the night (aka 11 pm, which is pretty damn late considering the store usually closes at 6 pm). Once a month you can come by for more wine, and an introduction to all the latest murder mysteries to hit the shelves.
